Watch Trailer

Driven by a desire to explore the historical core of coffee in Indonesia, Aroma of Heaven invites us to reflect on the intimacy between the coffee drinker and the coffee itself. The film highlights the context of modern colonialism behind the global flow of coffee and its relevance to commodification within the coffee industry. Commodification assumes coffee as a mere “product”—something uniform, fully tradable, and detached from its relationship with the ecosystem of the coffee plantation. Since 2011, the film crew has traced both local and international sources, engaging in dialogue with experts, farmers, and key actors within the coffee industry. Through an anthropological approach, the film reveals how relations of power are deliberately designed to shape perceptions of coffee flavor. Ultimately, expressions of coffee are cultural constructions formed within highly dynamic power relations.
